BUT......................... I had to attend Gp surgery today for a"minor procedure", and due to water damage the waiting room was out of use, so we all ended up standing (in my case propped up on two sticks!!) in the corridor, with a few chairs dotted about. As I am, today, virtually unable to walk due to severe pain, I eventually manged to grab a chair and sat down, feeling pretty rough. In marched Old Biddy, on one stick and VERY high heels. She took one look at me (feeling, if not looking, every inch my 60 years.....plus a few!!) and said pathetically- - and loudly - that she supposed she would just have to stand SOMEHOW, though how she would manage ...etc etc. At once, there was a mutter from others in the queue about people taking up spaces meant for the REALLY old and infirm, and one man actually told me to get up and let the old Biddy sit down. As I can hardly walk today, I thought this was a bit unjust, and told him so. I even went as far as to explain that I have RA...........................oooops, big mistake, this set the entire queue arguing that as I only have a bit of arthritis, I had NO right to be seated when there was a poorly person NEEDING the chair FAR more then me. Mercifully, the nurse came out at that point, took one look at me and fetched the surgery's wheelchair, then she sought help to get me into it, and off we went for my treatment (which was NOT nice). Later, on being wheeled into the corridor, I saw a number of the same faces still lined up ..............and all waiting for a flu jab. I just HOPE their bl... jab HURT as much as my treatment did, though in some cases, they did look a bit embarrassed!!!! Especially when my taxi came and I was wheeled out to it by the doctor !!!! Hi, trouble is generally people do not understand arthritis ! They are very ignorant about it. My friends and family have struggled to reallise how much it affects me, so a room full of ignoramus's that feel because of their age it is their right to sit, doe's not surprise me. Please do not get the idea I do not respect my elders I do, but some make it awfully difficult. John.

must agree there, John, ..................and this from someone who has, (until forced to join their ranks) always worked with older people (as carer through to Care Manager) and LOVED every minute of it! Guess I will become a crusty old bitch very soon too? what a dreadful thought! Hello Lylie,
I'm sorry for what happened to you. I just would like to say that age does not mean anything. I strongly believe that if you are kind and gentle when you are young, you will grow as a kind and gentle older person. Age does not make a person. You may become more understanding and empathetic as you undergo life's challenges but you may also become dry, nasty and bitter too!!
All depends if you were a kind and gentle person when you were young!
But i'm very glad that the nurse was sympathetic to you and i hope that these old, bitter and nasty old people learn something from this. Linda

Judgemental idiots! Hope that you are recovering from the procedure. You should have asked the doctor to speak to them about making sweeping statements and judgements.
Thinking of you my friend.

Like Julie- wish I'd been there! I wish people would mind their own business!!!! Or at least accept that there are others in more need. As for the old biddy- if she can wear high heels then she doesn't need a chair! Good on the nurse and doctor though.
Nothing surprises me these days though. I frequently use a stick when I'm out and about and although I don't expect people to give me preferential treatment, I'm rarely shown any consideration.
Hope you feel better soon.
Much love

My sister has the answer...... the trouble is ...........................I don't LOOK ill ............... or (maybe I should be flattered??) .................... OLD!!!! THAT'S why I didn't get any sympathy or the offer of a chair!!! so can someone please tell me.... how old do you have to LOOK??????? ps the "minor op" was on a VERY painful abcess on my spine, but I'm glad to say it is now sorted and drained and packed and I'm back to what passes for normal for me, thanks for asking!!! and thanks for the offer, dear Julie, but I 'm really glad you weren't ALL there, it was bad enough me and two nurses and two doctors crammed in there without you lot larking about and having a good giggle at my predicament (that's what I prefer to call it, you can think what you like!!!) L xxxx Always be aware that what you do might hurt others........and if it could, do nothing without careful consideration of the consequences

Dear Lylie
As I'm also over the 60 mark I can say that I'm often amazed at the poor example the elderly show to the younger generation. They are quick to pass judgement on the young but set a very poor example themselves. I once tried to help a very elderly lady in the supermarket and she had a go at me saying she wasn't helpless! No but she was certainly horrible!
I hope you get relief from the pain soon.
Love Brenda

Oh Lylie! Why on earth can`t people who have nothing good to say just keep their mouths SHUT? That sort of thing makes my blood boil. I`m glad you were put in the wheelchair - you should have given them the regal wave as you were wheeled past! Take care, & hope the abscess heals well, Kathleen x

I don't know about the regal wave Kathleen, I could think of something more appropriate! Doreen xx

Do you mean the Victory sign rather than the Regal wave?
